Raising Achievement

Provision for raising  Minority Ethnic  Achievement can be described as good when:

  • Ethnic monitoring and data analysis are used to target support for underachieving pupils
  • There is an inclusive and welcoming environment for all learners reflecting cultural pluralism and diversity
  • Relationships within the school between pupils and staff and between groups of pupils are positive
  • There are high expectations of all pupils
  • Parental and community involvement includes all groups, especially those 'hard to reach'
  • The ethos of the school is such that pupils' families and staff are able to share concerns regarding prejudice
  • There is a strong commitment, particularly on the part of the Senior Leadership Team, to combating racism, taking racist incidents seriously and reporting such incidents to the LA
  • The Race Equality policy (which may be included within the Single Equality policy) is monitored regularly for impact. Post monitoring concerns are shared with Governors and whole staff and appropriate actions are implemented
  • A Community Cohesion action plan is in place which is seen as a working document
  • Teachers' planning for EAL reflects a focus on both language and content
  • Content is sufficiently challenging no matter what the level of English Language Acquisition
  • Assessment procedures include information on the level and progress in English Language acquisition and first language competencies
  • There is an overt and explicit focus on ethnic minority achievement, particularly at middle and senior management levels
  • Mid phase new admissions with EAL are made welcome whenever they arrive
