ASTs are teachers who have been recognised through external assessment as having excellent classroom practice. ASTs specialise in teaching and learning and their skills in this area are used within their own school and with teachers from other schools through agreed outreach work.

Staffordshire has a growing team of ASTs covering a range of subjects/aspects. Presently there are two ASTs with a specific role in relation to NQT Induction:

  • Joan Batley, Key Stage Two
  • Rob Smith, Secondary

Subject / aspect specific ASTs may also be available to provide support and further development oportunities for NQTs.

Joan Batley

Joan teaches at Hugo Meynell Primary School at Loggerheads, near Market Drayton.

Joan has wide experience in all aspects of primary practice, including teaching and learning and class and behaviour management. She has considerable experience in working with trainee teachers and NQTs in the classroom situation. Joan is also an experienced induction tutor.

Rob Smith

Rob teaches at Westwood High School in Leek.

Rob has held a range of senior positions in school, including Head of English, and has very considerable expertise in teaching and learning and in class and behaviour management. He has a great deal of experience in supporting trainee teachers and NQTs in the classroom situation. Rob is also an experienced induction tutor.

How an AST might help you:

by working alongside you in the classroom to enable you to develop your skills in relation to learning and teaching

by observing your teaching and giving you constructive feedback and ideas which will enable to develop your practice

How can an AST be requested?

Requests for an AST to support an NQT should be made directly to, Jill Painter. It may save time if you telephone (01785 278268) to discuss your requirements before completing the request form. Please be aware that ASTs have one day a week for their 'outreach' activities and priority has to be given to those NQTs whose support needs are greatest.
