Frequently Asked Questions
I don't seem to be getting any information from the LA - why?
Check with your school that the 'Notification of Appointment' form has been completed to returned to the NQT Induction data base manager. If you think that there is still a problem contact Rachel Smith at Seabridge Centre; telephone number is 01782 297590. Completetion of this information ensures that an NQT is included on the induction data base and that funding is allocated.
I am only working in this school for a short while, can the LA help me to find long term employment?
The LA issues a regular vacancies list and this can be accessed vis the County Council website. Laura Elson can be contacted by e-mail and may be able to assist further. laura.elson@staffordshire.gov.uk You will need to secure a post of at least one term duration in order to begin, or continue, induction.
Can supply work count towards my induction period?
Yes, but for supply work to count it must be agreed in advance of the relevant term(s). In addition, periods of employment must be for at least a term in one school to count towards induction. Don't forget - you may only undertake supply teaching for a year and a term after your first appointment as a supply teacher without beginning induction. This is known as the four term rule.
What is a reduced timetable?
You must have a timetable of 90% of normal average teaching time to allow for your induction programme to take place. This arrangement is set out in the 'School teachers pay and conditions' document. However, you must be quite clear in your own mind which is your 'Entitlement Time' (the time set aside for NQTs) and PPA time that is an entitlement for all teachers. In practice, no full time NQT will actually teach more than approximately four days per week (on average).
I have left my Career Entry and Development Profile with all my student belongings - what should I do?
All new teachers leave initial training with a partially completed 'Career Entry and Development Profile' (CEDP). You are required to make the CEDP available to the school and to work with the induction tutor in using it to further your professional development. You must obtain your partially completed CEDP as a matter of urgency. Extra copies of the CEDP are available from the TTA; an electronic version is available on their web site.
How often will someone carry out classroom observation?
Classroom observation is an essential part of your induction programme. It should take place at least once every half term, with the first observation during the first four weeks of induction. Guidelines on this process are available for you.
What happens if I leave a school before finishing the induction period?
If a you leave a school after one or two terms, it is the headteacher's responsibility to retain the documentation relating to the induction support, monitoring and assessment which has been compiled to that point. It is then the responsibility of the headteacher of the school in which you recommence the induction period to obtain those records. This will ensure that each term of the induction period builds on previous terms. NQTs should also retain records from their induction and make these records available to the school.
I would like to talk to somebody about my work - but who?
In addition to providing advice and support to the school, you can talk to Derrick Golland or Jill Painter in strict confidence. Telephone Derrick on 01785 277964 or Jill on 01785 278268, leaving a message if they are not in the office; you can also contact them by e-mail.
