What's distinctive about music in Cannock Chase District?
There is a well established range of performing groups and amateur participation in the District.
There is lots of live music in pubs and clubs.
Major artists such as Jools Holland and Status Quo perform at the outdoor Chase Concerts at Birches Valley.
Greenwood Studios provides teaching, rehearsal and recording facilities used by many local young musicians.
At least 44 bands from Cannock Chase have a Myspace page.
Cannock can be proud of:
A wide range of local groups including male voice choirs, other choral groups, a community band, a brass band and a highland pipe band.
Possible development areas:
There is potential to develop local interest in music by young people. Youth centres are interested in music projects and Greenwood Studios, a leading local rehearsal and recording studio, plays an important role in the community for young musicians.
There is scope to encourage music development in Rugeley, a flat spot with comparatively little activity.
Interesting example of music activity locally:
Cannock Chase Technical College and Greenwood Studios held their first joint Battle of the Bands competition at Cannock College Main Hall on Friday 24 August 2007, the day after GCSE Results Day. The free to enter event - for both bands and the audience - saw 12 bands battling it out to win a professional live session recording and video at Greenwood Studios. The bands each performed a 15 minute set, plus guest performance from the band Area 15, which was currently supporting McFly and also appeared at Greenwood Studios all day music fest on the Saturday 4th August.
Battle of the Bands was a fantastic opportunity for local young people to express themselves in a creative and musical way. This event was the first of its kind for the College following a successful Freshers Day in July 2007 where bands performed on an outdoor stage.
