Design and Technology: self-evaluation guidelines

Provision is good when

  1. all pupils are creatively engaged in both designing and making activities using a range of materials and undertake tasks that focus on increasing their skills and knowledge;
  2. activities are planned by teachers so that knowledge and skills of making and designing are taught progressively and these activities are presented at a suitable, but challenging level and pace for each pupil;
  3. the nature of the design and technology activities reflects the age, ability and size of the group and allows pupils to use their knowledge and skills to create products of quality;
  4. pupils are made aware of the learning outcomes of each activity, their immediate targets and what they must do to progress further;
  5. a range of teaching strategies are used, matched to the needs of different learners, including; class teaching, group work and independent learning;
  6. Pupils produce quality products and systems in both 2D and 3D work throughout the range of activities and are encouraged to celebrate their achievements in a variety of ways;
  7. the assessment of pupils' work is undertaken to provide information for both teachers and pupils, is used to give immediate feedback to the pupils and other colleagues and to help plan and modify the teaching and learning in subsequent activities;
  8. a consistent approach is taken by the whole department to planning, teaching, monitoring and evaluating lessons and links between design and technology and other aspects of the curriculum are identified and developed where appropriate;
  9. pupils are taught in an interesting and visually stimulating environment, acknowledging the need for safety and hygiene;
  10. teaching and non-teaching colleagues are encouraged and given opportunities to develop their own skills, knowledge and understanding in the subject through a variety of INSET provision;
  11. the department implements policies which ensure that both statutory requirements and local needs are implemented and monitored.
