Educational Opportunities at Local Theatres
The New Vic Theatre in Newcastle under Lyme offers an exciting programme of concerts, plays and events performed in the round. In addition, the education team supports Staffordshire drama teachers by providing workshops, backstage tours, talks by theatre professionals and advice and support for after-school drama clubs. New Vic Borderlines works with some of North Staffordshire's most disadvantaged communities, using theatre to promote understanding, celebrate diversity, and experience the power of creativity. The New Vic Youth Theatre meets weekly during term time. The theatre provides some work experience placements for students.
The Stafford Gatehouse Theatre primarily stages the productions of touring companies, with the addition of its own productions of Stafford Festival Shakespeare, Summer School, and Pantomime. Established in 1991, Stafford Festival Shakespeare is one of the UK's leading Open Air Productions, held annually between June and July at Stafford Castle. This year's production, Hamlet, is bound to be popular with schools. The Stafford Gatehouse Youth Theatre works with young people aged between 7 and 18 who live in Stafford Borough. This award winning and expanding youth theatre is organised into six age groups, led by trained tutors and meeting weekly during school term times.
As a number one touring venue, The Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent is capable of taking the largest touring productions and has played host to the very best opera, dance, drama and musicals, direct from Broadway and the West End. The website gives details of workshops, talk-backs, resources and backstage tours. The theatre also provides some work experience placements for Y10 students.
The Lichfield Garrick stages the productions of touring companies and The Lichfield Garrick Rep Company puts on a mix of productions throughout the year, working closely with the local community. Recent collaborations include a reworking of the play 'Cold Comfort Farm', in association with the Lichfield Players, and a world premiere of a brand new musical. Smaller projects include drama and industry workshops for schools and local organisations and The Young Rep Company offers a range of opportunities for young people, including a weekly choir, holiday drama workshops and a planned weekend theatre school.
The Birmingham REP is one of the greatest educational resources in the region. With superb facilities, on stage and backstage, along with the talents of actors, designers, directors, technicians and education staff, the Rep offers excellent opportunities to learn about theatre and through theatre. Workshops and education packs are available to support current and past productions and there are details of backstage tours and work experience opportunities.
