Federations, Trusts and Academies as at 01 March 2013

Federations

A federation is a formal and legal agreement by which any number of schools share a governing body which is formally reconstituted. Federations can involve a mix of primary, special and secondary schools of any type or size. Schools in a federation continue to be individual schools and keep their existing category and character. They do not gain, lose or change their religious character, foundation or trust status through membership of a federation. There are currently 18 federations in Staffordshire:

Trust Schools

A Trust school is a foundation school which has set up a charitable foundation (or trust) to support the school. Trust schools remain as local authority maintained schools. Community schools can change to foundation status and then set up a charitable trust all in a single process. A Trust school manages its own assets, employs its own staffs and sets its own admissions criteria, as well as choosing which partners to work with e.g. businesses, business foundations, colleges, universities or community groups. There are currently 29 Trust schools in Staffordshire:

Academies

Academies have freedom from local authority control, which means that they have autonomy over the decisions they make and the education they deliver to their pupils. They also have the freedom to change the length of terms and schools days, set their own pay and conditions for staff, and freedom around the curriculum. There are currently 30 academies in Staffordshire (plus 2 sixth forms):
