Read Anne Bamford's evaluation study into the Wider Opportunities music programmes.

In 2000, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills announced that 'over time, all pupils in primary schools who wish to will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument'. In summer 2002, 6 local education authorities were invited by the then Department for Education and Skills (DfES) to participate in pilot programmes to demonstrate how the specialist music instrumental tuition could be developed to involve all pupils in Key Stage 2. The policy that emerged became known as the 'Wider Opportunities Pledge'.

Professor Anne Bamford, a leading international expert in arts provision in and out of schools has recently published an evaluation study into the Wider Opportunities music programmes throughout England. (In Staffordshire we call it K2M - Key to Music)

The overall results of the impact evaluation indicate that the WO music programme is of a high international standard and support the research we commissioned from Keele University in 2008 into our K2M programme.

You can read the executive summary of Professor Bamford's report here. If you would like to read the full report go to www.thefms.org
