Key stage 2 science tests
Following the publication of The Report of the Expert Group on Assessment (http://publications.dcsf.gov.uk/, reference number DCSF-00532-2009), the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has decided that there will be no whole cohort testing of science at the end of key stage 2 in 2010.
DCSF is now looking at how new materials and guidance to support teacher assessment in science can be made available to schools. Tests in English and mathematics remain as a key accountability measure for all primary schools.
From 2010, national standards in science at key stage 2 will be measured through the introduction of a new statutory sampling arrangement. The results of the new sampling arrangement will not be reported at school level.
Pupils and schools will be selected to form part of the statutory sample. All headteachers will need to ensure sample tests can be administered on the Friday of test week. Full details of the statutory sampling arrangements for science will be sent to schools and local authorities in the autumn term.
2010 key stage 2 test dates
The 2010 key stage 2 national curriculum tests will take place the week commencing 10 May 2010, as previously published in the 2009 Assessment and reporting arrangements (ARA). Key stage 2 science tests however have been discontinued and will not take place in 2010. This was confirmed by Vernon Coaker, Minister of State for Schools and Learners: 'Having taken account of QCA and Ofqual's advice, we will seek to implement the Expert Group's recommendation on moving the test to mid June in 2011'.QCA will provide further information about key stage 2 national curriculum tests for English and mathematics to schools and local authorities in the autumn term. We will also provide schools with further details of the outcomes of the Expert Group's report published earlier this year.
On 7 May 2009, the Expert Group on Assessment released its final report.QCA and the Department for Children, Schools and Families recognise that schools are beginning to make, or have already made, planning decisions for the 2009/10 academic year. We will ensure that any changes to the published test dates are communicated swiftly and directly.
