Health and Safety Committees/Forums
Our Health, Safety and Welfare policy states that "The Council is committed to the development of a positive health and safety culture" and that one means of achieving this is "by maintaining effective systems of communication on health, safety and welfare matters".
Formal communication of health, safety and welfare matters is done via a framework of meetings at council, directorate and local level (see left). Some of these forums provide the Council's joint consultation mechanism for engaging the involvement of the workforce, and consulting on proposed changes with union and staff representatives.
Health and safety is also required to be a standing item on team meeting agendas to ensure effective consultation takes place at a local level with employees.
The Council recognises the important role of Safety Representatives and safety committees in consulting with employees on health and safety matters. Managers should ensure that Safety Representatives are allowed the necessary time off and facilities to enable them to carry out their duties.
