Model School Health and Safety Policy

The model H&S Policy has been revised and updated to take account of changes in the County Council Health, Safety and Welfare Policy and to include references to the "roles" of staff within Health and Safety introduced in the County Council Policy.

This is a model policy, and you are advised to ensure that it is adapted to take account of the roles and responsibilities in your own establishments, and to ensure that the Arrangments section refers to the actual arrangments you have in your premises.

Audit and Evaluation

The Council's Health and Safety Policy requires Headteachers and other managers to monitor standards of health and safety.  A three stage evaluation and audit process is in place to to ensure that this takes place.

STEP 1.  A Premise or Team Evaluation of day to day health and safety issues must be carried out by Premises and/or Team Managers in October of each year.

STEP 2. Managers carry out a Self Audit to enable them to identify their own health and safety managment achievements against defined standards.
This document must be completed in January each year by Managers / Headteachers for each operational service/school.

STEP 3. Internal Health and Safety Audit completed by a Directorate Health and Safety Advisor.

Health and Safety Planner

This planner outlines the key tasks for schools when managing health and safety. This planner is a template for schools to use and adapt to their own individual needs.

Health & Safety Service Level Agreement.

Details of the 2010/11 Service Level Agreement for Strategic Health and Safety Service are now available . The opportunity introduced in 2009/10 to buy the enhanced service, which includes access to an annual planning visit and termly briefings, continues this year.

The Service Level Agreement for the Design and Technology Support Service is also available for fixed machines in D&T Departments.

Annual Report by H&S Coordinators (Template)

This template is designed to be used by Health and Safety Coordinators and/or heads of establishment to report health and safety performance to Governing Bodies or Senior Management teams.

Whilst this is not a compulsory report, it provides a useful opportunity for Governors and/or Senior Managers to receive important health and safety information in a summarised form so that they are:

  1. kept informed of progress and developments, and
  2. to support informed decision making on allocation of resources on the basis of risk.

It is recommended that such a report is produced, presented and discussed annually.
